This years MAXXIS British Championship Round on 30th June at Desertmartin is almost here and the track and Club are gearing up for the biggest motocross day of the year, the prestige added to this year by Jeffrey ‘The Bullet’ Herlings making an appearance, although a foot injury at last week’s GP in Kegums, Latvia will rule out any possibility of him racing, he will be there to see his fans and watch the racing.
In the MX1 Class for 450cc machines, the Championship is headed by Grand Prix winner Tommy Searle on his BOS Factory Holeshot Kawasaki on 181 points from Scotsman, though honorary Ulsterman Shaun Simpson on his RFX PAR Homes KTM 5 points behind, Shaun will be making a return to racing after injury but he loves Desertmartin and couldn’t miss out. Third is popular Latvian Gert Krestinov on his Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki, a long way off Shaun, but the popular Latvian always draw fans from the ex-pats living in Ireland. Local interest here will be riders like Stuart Edmonds in 15th place at the moment, the popular Dubliner now doing most of his racing in GB on his Fluid CCM Husqvarna, Luke Smith from Millisle now living in GB and riding MSR Redline Yamaha in 17th place, locally based and in form Jason Meara on his Kawasaki will be a good outside bet for a podium maybe, and big brother John will not be far away on his similar machine, also entered is Richard McKeown now also GB based but he was virtually brought up on Desertmartin circuit so he should go well too.
The super competitive MX2 Class is currently led by Dylan Walsh on his Revo Husqvarna by a single point from fellow youngster Josh Gilbert on his Buildbase Honda, third, only six point adrift is Walsh’s team mate 21 year old Swede Alvin Ostlund on his Revo Husqvarna, fourth is Conrad Mewse on local owned Team Hitachi fuelled by Milwaukee Powertools KTM owned by Crossgar business man Roger Magee, while tied with Conrad is his young Dutch team mate Bas Vaessen, while sixth only two points behind these two is our own Martin Barr on his Crescent Yamaha, while other local interest will be on the in form Glenn McCormick on his Unique Fit Out Husqvarna currently 12th, James Mackrel on his Lyons Bros Peugeot Yamaha, and Jake Sheridan from Dublin on his RSR Plant KTM,
With support from a great entry of 13 to 15-year olds on 85cc machinery it should be great days family entertainment for the spectators at the magnificent Desertmartin Facility near on the Rectory Road, Draperstown BT45 5QW.
